It was the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Just before the long-awaited Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere last night was about to end, in came Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) grand entrance. The Mother of Dragons finally ascended onto her very own throne.

She arrived at the shores of her birthplace and, judging by her look alone, Daenerys will stop at nothing to win the game. Winter may be here, but with Khaleesi back at her rightful place, Westeros won’t know what hit them.

It’s no secret that the daughter of the Mad King is becoming more like her father–or dead brother–with each passing episode. However, there was a significant change in the atmosphere this time around; while Targaryen’s has been known for her long, white braids and relatively pastel costume color palette, this time Khaleesi appeared more power hungry than ever, replacing the soft and delicate dresses she’s formally known for with a rare all-black (with a touch of red, her house colors) ensemble that proves she’s ready to dominate.

In an interview with Racked, the show’s costume designer Michele Clapton says that just as Queen Cersei Lannister resembles her dead father, “Dany begins to resemble her dead brother; note the neckline and extended shoulders.” The slight touches of red “creep in” throughout her outfit (“read into that what you will,” the designer tells Racked) and the head of the army’s dark suit with thigh high slits and leather embellished cape gives a slight nod to the uniform of the Unsullied soldiers. Instead of a crown, she dons “the chain of command,” with a dragons’ heads on it. “It’s a precursor to the crown,” Clapton says. “It’s a very symbolic piece of jewelry. It’s a definite statement of intent.”

As Khaleesi stomped across the sand in her unexpectedly rugged, jet black knee-high boots, the sense we got was that the Mother of Dragons is not here to play. With “shall we begin” as her chilling last line, it’s safe to assume she’s only getting started with her commanding dark looks.
